Characters
Soga Goro
The younger of the Soga brothers. He has pledged to avenge his father’s death by killing the murderer Kudo Sukenari, and continues his preparation for his plans even through the traditional New Year’s holiday. A character with superhuman power and that pure sense of justice particular to youth.
Soga Juro
The elder of the Soga brothers. He is captured by Kudo, and his spirit appears in Goro’s dream seeking help. Unlike Goro, he is graceful and genteel.
Ozatsuma Shuzen Dayu
The lead singer (tayu) for the Ozatsuma music used on stage. When the drama was first performed, the singer appeared on stage and offered a personal greeting to the audience due to his friendship with Danjuro II, who played the lead. This gave rise to a tradition whereby the musician wishes Goro a Happy New Year and presents him with a fan and picture of the auspicious treasure boat as a seasonal offering. He is sometimes known as Ozatsuma Bun Tayu.
Hataemon
A horse keeper who receives fees for carrying people and luggage on his horse. When he happens to pass Goro’s home, his horse is suddenly commandeered by the hero, who wants urgently to save his brother.
