Overview |
A five-scene dance drama based on the legend of the six celebrated poets of the Heian Period. Today the music is a mixture of nagauta narrative style and kiyomoto dance style. The dances for Bunya and Kisen are often performed independently. Five men try unsuccessfully to win the heart of the beautiful Komachi. The “Kisen” scene is set in modern times, so Komachi is replaced by her tea-serving lady Okaji. This is a difficult piece in which the same person is meant to play the five varied roles of a high-ranking priest, playboy, handsome man, secular monk and evil villain. Nowadays various dancers often appear when the entire piece is performed.
