Overview |
The play was based on a five-act period piece written for the puppet theater that debuted in Osaka in December 1752. It was quickly adapted for Kabuki. Many scenes were related to The Tales of Ise, such as the fight between two princes for the imperial succession and the nobleman Ariwara Narihira’s rescue of a concubine. The full drama is rarely performed today due to the complicated storyline and character relations; the only parts regularly staged are Rampei’s mad scene and ensuing fight, which correspond to Act IV. The fight scene is one of Kabuki’s most breathtaking battles. The scuffle with the ladder and lanterns was created by Bando Yaenosuke, a 20th-century fight master.
