Wanya Kyubei
A major Osaka merchant known widely as Wankyu. He falls madly in love with the courtesan Matsuyama and spends a fortune on her, resulting in his confinement in a detention home. The pain of not being able to meet Matsuyama drives him insane, and he escapes from prison to wander aimlessly.
Matsuyama
The highest ranked courtesan in the Shinmachi area of Osaka. She appears in Wankyu’s dream, speaking of her love for him and recalling the happy days they spent together. But this is only an illusion.
