Overview

Based on the farce Hanago from the ancient Kyogen theater, humorous skits that were used as comic relief between masked Noh dramas. The universal story cuts across all boundaries of age, gender and nationality, and is often performed in domestic and foreign tours. The writer Okamura Shiko, a playwright and critic in the early part of the 20th century, adapted numerous Kyogen pieces into Kabuki. The premiere featured a notably young team with the then-up-and-coming Kikugoro VI (aged 24), Mitsugoro VII (27) and Kichiemon I (23). This show was a hit from the start and was revived many times with the same cast. It became one of the Kikugoro family’s Ten Revised Classic Plays.
