| Overview |
This is Act VIII, now performed independently, of a nine-act puppet play called Omi Genji Senjin Yakata (Castle of Genji Advance Guard at Omi). The story is nominally set in the Kamakura Period of the 13th century, but refers obliquely to the extermination of the Toyotomi family in Osaka in 1615. It is a particularly complex story among history dramas. The running time is long, but the drama unfolds deftly like a detective story whereby each character tries to guess the intentions of others in a consistently interesting tale. Kichiemon I (1886–1954) was legendary in the role, performing it frequently in the post-war era. There are films of his performance.
