Ehon Taikoki: Amagasaki Kankyo

This is based on the coup at Honnoji Temple in June 1582, when Akichi Mitsuhide assassinated his master Oda Nobunaga. The play thinly disguised the protagonists, calling the former Takechi Mitsuhide and the latter Oda Harunaga. The historical Mitsuhide ruled for only 13 days before he himself was assassinated, so the full drama is a 13-act play from 1 June, when he was persistently criticized by his master, to his rebellion and ultimate death. In Kabuki, Amagasaki, which is the tenth act, is the only act regularly performed today. The play offers key roles for all of a troupe’s best actors, so it is often performed in big events such as name-taking ceremonies. It is a representative grand historical drama. A performance of all acts related to Mitsuhide was presented at the National Theater in November 2005. This covered Acts I, II, VI and IX, concluding with Act X (Amagasaki).
