Overview

This was initially performed as a puppet drama in 1732 in Osaka and transferred the same month to the Kabuki stage. This is the only of the original five acts still performed. The female-role specialist who plays Akoya must play three instruments on stage (koto, shamisen, kokyu) in a show of complex emotions via music. The full play was performed at the National Theatre in 1997 under the name Futari Kagekiyo to Akoya Kotozeme (Two Kagekiyos and the Koto Torture of Akoya). Bando Tamasaburo performed Akoya for the first time in this production and has been known for the role since. His performance at the Kabukiza in October 2015 was filmed and released as part of Shochiku’s Cinema Kabuki series in January 2017.
